We were reaching the Student Union when Dr. Rosenau broke the silence. “You know, I never eat young ladies on Fridays. Only on Tuesdays.”
I couldn’t help laughing. “Do I look that apprehensive?”
“Yes, rather.” He opened the door for me. “But I have just the cure for you. It’s David Rosenau’s patented shyness remedy, strawberry shortcake garnished with whipped cream, to be taken at least once weekly in charming company. Doctor’s orders.”
Kate is a college junior, a gifted student who skipped two grades in school, a naval officer's daughter who's lived in more places than she can remember. Shy and bookish, she's never had a boyfriend, let alone been kissed or gone on a date. Kate thinks falling in love is something that only happens to other girls.
David is a college professor, a sailor, a brilliant scientist trapped in a failed marriage; he buries himself in teaching and research. David's convinced that love has passed him by and he'll go through life with an empty heart.
When Kate gets a campus job as David's typist, they discover they're both mistaken. Letters To My Mother is the story of a May-December romance set in 1950s Seattle.

I just wanted to post a note on your blog to tell you that I loved this book. It's just a great story! Thanks for writing it and sharing it with the world!
I can't thank you enough for taking the time to write me. Knowing that one's work has touched someone means so much to an author - you've made my day!
I emailed you before but just wanted to reiterate how much I love this book, Rebecca. It's a wonderful love story and I've already read it three times and plan to have another read before the end of the year. I hope you get lots of readers who can enjoy and be touched by Kate and David's love story. It's a classic one!
Take care!
This morning I was still in bed when I turned on my iTouch to read the mail. Your message was the first one I saw, guaranteeing that I started the day with a smile. Thank you so much, Rae; I appreciate your comments more than you can guess. I hope you have an up-to-date copy of Letters; I've revised the text numerous times, most recently in August of this year, after putting the manuscript through an editing program (I wrote WHAT?). The story hasn't changed, but some of the phrasing has been improved (I hope). The version on this blog is current as is the downloadable PDF.

Hi Anna,
Thank you so much for letting me know that you enjoyed Letters To My Mother; comments like yours mean so much to me.
At the moment I'm working on another book, a mystery, titled Six Bells. It's quite different from Letters and more fun to write. I've made a New Year's Resolution that I'll finish it in a couple of months. We'll see!
I must congratulate you on your fine accomplishment of giving a voice to your thoughts, and giving words to your voice. Its such a simple yet nicely crafted story told. I just love it! God Bless you with the Best Rebecca : D

I consider my self a reader i love all books even the not so good ones. I've never read a book that has tuched me the way this one has. i loved it so much. i just want to think you for writing a story so full of love.
Hi. I just finished reading and realized I did not stop when I started reading about three hours ago -- even forgot my dinner beside me. I love the realistic backdrop of the relationship established. It does sometimes do good if love is not mushed up too romantically that the fantasy is hard to separate from what the reality around us would let us LIVE love.
The story generated a lot of emotions from me -- and I have been reading stories since I was six. I love the blend of emotions and what it invoked in the reader. I also like the surprising humor which truly made me laugh out loud. I am not much of a fan of romantic novels but this one I truly like and will read again... and again. I will be a liar if I say I fully am 'content'... as there is a lingering feeling of pain as the story is still impressed in my mind. I guess life is such and love is what we make of it.
Thank you for reminding me that love is not a fantasy but should be felt and lived in the reality of our life.
Dear Rebecca
I have read your book like a child eating sweets these last few days online as I can't buy novels out here in Bangladesh.
Thank you for being very kind and posting your book online for us to read. Your book really helped me escape from the poverty and hopelessness I face in my work with the people here.
Thank you

When a friend of mine recommended this book I couldn't understand why she insisted so much that I should read it...
I know now... This story touched every chunk of my heart. I laughed and cried while I was reading but most of all I felt my heart filled with love again. My mind filled with images. Filled with the salty freedom of Kate's & David's hearts. The freedom they could share only when they were together.
Thank you Rebbecca for this beautiful story. Since English is not my mother language, I find it very difficult to come up with the proper words to describe how I enjoyed it.
Elena, thank you so much for your kind words. Your message was the first thing I read on the computer this morning and I've been smiling ever since. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the story.

This book is a masterpiece. The feeling in the pages so raw, tender and palpable at the same time. I can't believe it isn't autobiographical, there is so much love, pain and emotion all brilliantly interwoven together. It is a beautiful, beautiful story. I've read it many times already and I know I will keep coming back to it. Thank you so much for sharing such a great love story, it is one of my all-time favourites. Really, really thank you!
Fantastic novel, I was hooked from the first chapter, and unable to put this novel down (even if it did mean two very tired days at work from late night / early morning reading). Kate's innocence and naivety was beautifully captured and Davids love for Kate felt so authentic and heartfelt its hard to believe it was fiction. Beautifully written, would make a beautiful film too. Definately a book to return to time and time again. I'm recommending this to all my friends.
'Letters To My Mother' is for me one of the defining accounts of a young woman's first love.
Sixty tears have not dulled the heartbreaking joy, nor the bitter sadness of this true story.
Take what you want, and pay for it says God. Truly, every tiny piece of innocent joy must be paid for in the coin of bitter unhappiness.
Told with touching innocence, it is fresh at every reading.
Rebecca Heath has the rare ability to put human feelings onto the printed page. Let us hope she continues to write and publish.
